An important work in which many of the common terms and concepts still in use in tectonics, such as Gondwanaland (a supercontinent) and Tethys (a former equatorial ocean), were first proposed. It had an enormous influence on the development of geosciences and is easily the greatest single work on the evolution of the earth's surface features. There was a 15-year gap between publication of part IV and part V. The latter was printed in small numbers and is therefore quite rare.
