RAIKES, 2ND LIEUTENANT JOHN WALTER JULIAN

ROYAL ENGINEERS – FOWKE MEDAL 1910:  bound folio volume of the work of 2nd Lieutenant John Walter Julian Raikes (1888-1974) whilst undertaking the construction course at the School of Military Engineering.

The volume containing specifications of the work to be undertaken, manuscript notes, calculations and specifications and also, on stout paper, many fine large folding drawings in pen & ink and watercolour of the W. door of South School, Brompton Barracks, a drainage system, a floor design, house design, a hutment scheme, and a steel bridge design, etc.  Many marked with the examiner’s notes and comments in red ink.
Folio, contemporary full blue morocco lettered in gilt on upper cover, “Fowke Medal 1910. R. E. 2nd Lieutenant J.W.J. Raikes R.E.”  The Fowke medal awarded to the top student of the Clerk of Works course. Francis Fowke (1823-1865) the architect of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and a Captain in the Corps of Royal Engineers.
