1644 Saint
Francis Assisi Monastic Rule of Penance ENGLISH ed Angelus Douay
“The deeds you do may be the only sermon
some persons will hear today.”
― Francis of Assisi
In the 13th-century, devout followers of Saint Francis of
Assisi formed the Third Order of Saint Francis. This order closely followed the
preachings and examples set by Saint Francis who corresponded with these groups
through letter. These letters ultimately developed into what would become the
rules for penance in the Third Order.
The 17th-century brought an English Franciscian friar Richard
Angelus of St. Francis Mason who published a commentary and meditation on the
Rule of the Third Order which was first translated into English in 1644. This
commentary was written to provide guidance and clarity to these Third Order ‘tertiaries’.
