Spain) “Toros en Vallauris 1957” (Bulls in Vallauris) Plate-signed color lithograph
printed (with authorization from the artist) in 1959 by Mourlot Freres of Paris
after Picasso’s poster-size 1957 linocut etching; part of the special edition series (called “Affliche
Originales”) of 1933 – 1959 exhibition posters by ‘School of Paris’ artists. (Ref: Plat MP. 83). The sheet
measures 305 x 235 mm (12 x 9.25 inches) and with the museum grade mat and
frame, the work of art is 18 x 16.5 inches.
Picasso lived in Vallauris in the southeast of France from 1948 – 1955. At that time, his interests included
bullfighting and ceramics. This image,
in blue, contains unusually shaped hand drawn letters and a simple, cave-like
drawing of the bull and the bullfighter set inside an eye-shaped form.
Picasso’s original edition of
linocut etchings was published by the ‘Association des Potiers de Vallauris,
