This is a used Surface 2, 32GB, sold as not working/for parts.

Includes:
  • The tablet itself (no OS installed/unable to run recovery procedure)
  • The original box
  • Power Cord (newer type with the more visible charging light band)
  • Type Cover 2 (lights up but is not working)
All known issues appear to be mostly software related.

These items appear to be working:
  • The tablet's battery appears to hold a charge; battery seems to be in a usable condition and was last known to be able to power the device for a few hours at least.
  • microSD card reader (located behind kickstand) works and properly detects a microSD card in diskpart.
  • Kickstand works and clicks in 2 different angles when opened, stays closed when closed.
  • The tablet will accept compatible Surface keyboard covers (tested with another cover - the one included does not work).
  • All ports (USB, micro HDMI, headphones) and buttons (power, volume up/down rocker, capacitive Windows button) appear to be working and were last known to be working.
  • Wireless adapters (Wifi and Bluetooth) were last known to be working.
  • Both cameras (front and back), speakers and microphone were last known to be working.
  • All Sensors (accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, magnetometer, etc.) were last known to be working.
  • The Surface itself will turn on and show the Surface logo as depicted, and is able to boot to a USB drive.
  • Haptic vibration motor is working (vibrates when powering up Surface and when touching the capacitive Windows button on the bezel).
  • Charger lights up and I assume it charges.

Here are the issues I've found:

The charging port is a bit fiddly, seems to be an issue on the tablet itself as it exhibits the same behavior with another Surface RT charger; I have to tap it and/or play around with the connection bit to get it to connect sometimes.
  • The Surface will not boot into Windows RT, and instead will continuously reboot (unless booting into a USB drive) as there is currently no OS present on the disk.
    • The bootloop can be stopped via shutting down the machine by holding down the power button for several seconds.
  • The touchscreen does not work (no known physical damage to screen - my guess is that it's a firmware issue as the capacitive Windows button in the bottom middle does work).
  • Type Cover lights up and responds to the proximity sensors, but does not work.

Tablet and all included accessories are being sold as-is due to the specified issues, hence the condition "for parts or not working."

Problem details:
A reset via a recovery USB (created as per Microsoft's Surface Recovery Image web article) was attempted for this device, but the recovery process failed, and any subsequent attempts fail at the same step (fails and quits at 2% progress). Performing operations on the disk via the DISKPART utility results in the error "Virtual Disk Service error: The object is not found."

Used and stored in a smoke-free, climate-controlled home.
