MAURICE ACHENER (1881 - 1963)

Born at Mulhouse in Alsace, Achener began his formal studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg. Though he had originally intended to be a painter, continuing his studies under Ludwig von Loffetz at Munich, Achener was strongly influenced by Peter von Halm, another of his teachers and a highly regarded etcher. It is his masterful etchings for which Achener is best known today. He also taught himself wood cutting and learned wood engraving under Herbert Lespinasse and Jules Germain.

Achener went to Paris in 1907, and then to Italy in 1910 where he further refined his style. He ultimately returned to Paris and made it his home. It is there that Achener died in 1963.
