Matchbox Yesteryear die cast models were produced in the United Kingdom from around 1957 to 1992 being one of the series of models that can trace their roots back to the pocket money toys of the Matchbox 1-75 series of small model cars and lorries that fitted in a matchbox size box and in many cases could be used with your Hornby or Triang model railway. The Matchbox Yesteryear models were made to satisfy the collectors market in the UK, rather than the toy market although many children played with them including my own and came in various scales. Unlike the competitors such as the beautiful Italian Rio and the more solid French Solido Golden age models which would be destroyed in play by most children. Today they are a colourful reminder of the past in respect of brands and advertising and are still collected to make an attractive display. At one time certain models such as the RAF Crossley fetch silly money but now die cast collectors have so much choice and people buy the models because they like them although some variations still seem to be on sale at amazing prices .Most of the latter models do not look out of place on a period O gauge layout and some of the buses would be ok with a period OO gauge display. Matchbox as brand still exists today, no longer in the same ownership and is no longer produced in the United Kingdom
