The special 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Uncirculated Coin Set was designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar, first released in 1964. Each coin features the Kennedy portrait design on the obverse (heads) with the year 2014. Something special for any collector or the perfect gift!

The set includes two 2014 Kennedy half-dollars with uncirculated finishes, one each from the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia and Denver.  Two additional coins (in a protective mailer) are from Philadelphia and Denver Mints.  They are added to this collector bundle to contrast the standard business strikes.

The packaging includes a coin card and folder. On the front of the folder is the U.S. Mint logo with the words “50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Uncirculated Coin Set.” The coins are encapsulated in a separate card in the folder and the obverse (heads) and reverse (tails) of each coin are visible. When the coin card is flipped over from the front to the back, the text and reverse designs appear upright.

The front of the folder includes an enlarged partial image of the obverse of the 1964 Kennedy half-dollar, along with the number “5” and the 1964 obverse coin image to represent the “0,” representing “50”. The inside of the folder includes an enlarged partial image of the reverse of the 1964 Kennedy half-dollar, smaller coin images of the obverse and reverse of the coin, and information regarding the 50th anniversary of this coin design.  Jeffs Coins Bundle includes the original 1964 coin in a 2x2 flip as part of this special offer.

Coin design descriptions, a Certificate of Authenticity, coin specifications, and the official Department of the Treasury seal are printed on the back of the card containing the two coins.

The designs on the coins replicate the portrait on the 1964 design:

Obverse: The design shows a portrait of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the youngest-ever-elected president. U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Gilroy Roberts based this profile on a portrait prepared for Kennedy’s presidential medal. Roberts created his original 1964 design shortly after Kennedy’s assassination.

Reverse: The design is based on the presidential seal and was done by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Frank Gasparro. It consists of a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, holding a symbolic olive branch and a bundle of 13 arrows. A ring of 50 stars surrounds the design, which gives this coin the distinction of having more stars than any other United States coin ever produced for circulation.

Note: All other U.S. Mint 2014 Kennedy half-dollars that are not included in the K13, K14 and K15 sets share the common reverse described above, while the obverse features a strong but simple portrait of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”.

The designs on the coins in this set feature the 1964 Kennedy half-dollar portrait design on the obverse (heads) and include the year “2014” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the coin.

Link to buy a coin from the West Point Mint Facility

Located near the U.S. Military Academy in New York state, the United States Mint at West Point manufactures the entire family of American Eagle proof and uncirculated coins in gold, silver, and platinum. The gold and platinum coins are manufactured in denominations of one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth -ounce. Silver bullion coins are manufactured in one-ounce denomination.

Historical Background: The 'Fort Knox of Silver' and the Newest Mint

The West Point Mint produces gold, silver and platinum bullion coins.

Erected in 1937 as the West Point Bullion Depository, this was originally a storage facility for silver bullion and was nicknamed "The Fort Knox of Silver." From 1973 to 1986, West Point produced cents, and in 1980 began striking gold medallions. Shortly afterward, approximately 20 billion dollars worth of gold was stored in its vaults, making it second only to Fort Knox for gold storage. Today, it is also the major producer of gold coins.

The red letter date for West Point was March 31, 1988, when it gained official status as a United States Mint. Today, it is still a storage facility, but also manufactures, packages and ships gold and silver commemorative coins, and American Eagle Bullion coins in proof and uncirculated condition. Its Platinum Eagles have been very popular since their first issuance in 1997. In 2000, it struck the first ever Gold and Platinum Bi-Metallic Coin.

Because of its extremely high security, the West Point facility does not offer public tours.  Jeffs Coins information source US Mint.
