Italy - Development and Crisis in the Post War Economy, by Gisele Podbielski

Published by Clarendon in 1974, 207 pages. Paprrback (S8295H)

From the rear side cover: Thisvolume presents a concise general review of Italian economic development since 1945. It traces the rapid and apparently smooth growth of the 1950s and analyses the recurrent problem of reconciling this growth with internal and external stability. The problems confronting Italian policymakers are explained in terms of structural imbalances, namely the disparity between technologically progressive, competitive, export-orientated, and large-scale industries on the one hand, and backward, inefficient, traditional industrial and service sectors dominated by small- and medium-sized enterprises on the other; between a rapid growth of private consumption and a very inadequate level of collective consumption; between shortages of skilled workers in some areas and the persistence of large-scale under utilization of labour resources in others; between excessive urbanization and congestion and the abandonment of rural regions. All these factors are accentuated by the development gap between the Centre North and the South and by the political instability which causes fear of government action and distrust of change.

The condition of the book is generally good. The cover has several minor scuffs and creases, and creasing and wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a name in pen on the first inside page.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
