WHOLESALE 10 (TEN) KISSI PENNIES of WEST AFRICA PRIMITIVE BRIDE PRICE GENUINE

Long (approximately 8 inches), twisted iron wire, was in some use as money from the 1800's to just after the World War I. The iron was smelted & worked in several Mandingo villages and used primarily by 4 tribes, including the Kissi, Bande, Kpelle & the Loma, who inhabit was is today, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. They were referred to as 'coins with soul', and if a Kissi was broken, it could not circulate until repaired by a witch doctor. The value in the early 1900's was something like 2,000 for a wife.

The logo of the Bank of Liberia is made up of 2 crossed Kissi, as shown in our picture, and although we offer these Liberia 5 Dollar banknotes of 1991 (showing one of the major industries=rubber) wholesale separately (eBay item # 234065351939)*, they are not part of this lot of 10 Kissi.
