SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 30.5 x 19.5 cm (12 x 7.75 inches) plus margins (medium) with a centre fold as issued.

ARTIST:  Drawn by John Charlton. John Charlton (1849–1917) was an English painter and illustrator of historical and especially battle scenes, mainly from contemporary history.

PROVENANCE:  Published in 'The Wonder Book of Soldiers for Boys and Girls, edited by Harry Golding'. Ward. Lock & Co. Limited, London, Melbourne and Toronto.

TYPE: Antique colour lithograph printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The First Battle of the Marne was a battle of the First World War fought from 6 to 12 September 1914. It resulted in an Allied victory against the German armies in the west. The battle was the culmination of the Retreat from Mons and pursuit of the Franco–British armies which followed the Battle of the Frontiers in August and reached the eastern outskirts of Paris.
