Background

The San Antonio Missions were among the largest concentrations of Spanish missions in North America, established in the 1700s, and helped create the foundation for the City of San Antonio, TX. The construction of aqueducts and irrigation canals (acequias) brought water to the missions sustaining farming and ranching. The missions’ toolmaking, carpentry, looming, spinning, and masonry also contributed to the community’s ability to be self-sustaining.

Characteristics

This design depicts elements of the Spanish Colonial Real coin to pay tribute to the missions. Within the quadrants are symbols of the missions: wheat symbolizes farming; the arches and bell symbolize community; a lion represents Spanish cultural heritage; and a symbol of the San Antonio River represents irrigation methods and life-sustaining resources.

The Lowell story

America's self-image is founded in part on the nation's rapid rise to industrial preeminence by World War I. While there is no single birthplace of industry, Lowell's planned textile mill city, in scale, technological innovation, and development of an urban working class, marked the beginning of the industrial transformation of America. Visitors can see today the working components of this early manufacturing center---the dam and nearly six miles of canals that harnessed the energy of the Merrimack River; the mills where the cloth was produced; a boardinghouse representing the dozens of like buildings that housed the workers; the churches where they practiced their faiths; the ethnic neighborhoods. These are the roots of American industry and of American working people

Previously issued Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter was established in 1964

to protect 134 miles of the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers in the Ozark Highlands of

southeastern Missouri. The park encompasses 80,785 acres of unique natural

resources, including a world-class spring system that is unparalleled in North

America, more than 400 caves, and other special geologic features.

The rivers offer remarkably clean, clear water that is complemented by the breathtaking blue shade of the waters of the large springs. The spectacular natural beauty of the area attracts park visitors to participate in a variety of recreational opportunities, such as john boating, canoeing, swimming, and fishing. Hiking, hunting, and horseback riding are also enjoyed across the landscape.

In addition to the unique natural features of the Ozarks, the National Park Service preserves the heritage and lifeways of the Ozark culture, which was heavily shaped by the remote and rugged landscape. The park manages 249 historic structures that are scattered throughout the park and also preserves the history and remnants of prehistoric peoples who settled in the region during the past 12,000 years.

Coin Characteristics

The coin design depicts Alley Mill, a steel roller mill built in 1894. This merchant mill was used to convert wheat into flour. Much of the original milling equipment is still in place, and visitors to the park can tour the mill. Source US Mint

Cedar Hill: Frederick Douglass's Home in Anacostia

Man Standing by House
Cedar Hill in February 1887. The man standing near the house is probably one of Frederick Douglass's sons or grandsons.

NPS

Construction of the House

• The house was built between 1855 and 1859 for John Welsh Van Hook, an architect from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The house consisted of between 6 to 14 rooms.

• In 1854, Van Hook partnered with John Fox and John Dobler and formed the Union Land Association, whose offices were in the Van Hook home. These developers purchased 100 acres of farmland to form a new subdivision called Uniontown (today Anacostia).

Frederick Douglass at Cedar Hill

• On September 1, 1877, Douglass paid $6,700 to the Freedmen’s Savings and Trust company for the home and 9 and ¾ acres of land.

• Douglass purchased an additional 5 and ¾ acres of land from Ella R. Talburtt in 1878.

• Douglass moved into the home with his first wife, Anna Murray Douglass, during the fall of 1878.

• Following the death of Anna in 1882, Douglass married Helen Pitts in 1884 and resided with her at Cedar Hill until his death on February 20, 1895.

• Douglass made a series of additions to the house, dating from 1877 to 1893. By the time of his death, the home was converted into a 21-room mansion.

• The improvements most likely made between 1877 and 1878 included the construction of a two-story, wood-framed addition at the rear of the house. The original kitchen was converted into a dining room and a new kitchen was added to the south wing. Upstairs a partition which divided two rooms on the west side of the house was removed and replaced by two walls to create three smaller bedrooms. Finally, during this period, the attic was finished to create five additional rooms.

• Other additions were made to the home throughout the years and included the building of a new library around 1886 and the addition of a second-story bedroom between 1892 and 1893.

Turning Cedar Hill into a Historic Site

• In 1900, at the urging of Helen Pitts Douglass, the U.S. Congress chartered the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association (FDMHA). Upon Helen’s death in 1903, the FDMHA received the property.

• The FDMHA partnered with the National Association of Colored Women to complete the first restoration of the Douglass Home in 1922.

• The FDMHA later petitioned the federal government to become involved in the preservation of Cedar Hill.

• On September 5, 1962, the Frederick Douglass estate became a unit of the National Park Service. Plans for restoration were put forth in 1962.

• The second restoration project was completed in January 1972. The house officially reopened to the public on February 14, 1972.

• Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in September 1980 for the addition of a visitor center to the grounds. The visitor center was completed and opened to the public in February 1982.

• The most recent restoration lasted from 2004 to 2007. The site officially reopened to the public on February 14, 2007.

House on Sunny Day
Cedar Hill as it appears today.

Prehistoric earthworks by mound builders cultures are common in the Midwest. However, mounds in the shape of mammals, birds, or reptiles, known as effigies, apparently were constructed primarily by peoples in what is now known as southern Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, and small parts of Minnesota and Illinois. Exceptions are the Great Serpent Mound in south-eastern Ohio, and Mound A at Poverty Point, Louisiana, built in the shape of a large soaring bird.

Each strike has a unique identity and it is fun to show the big differences in all 5 strikes.
