Vaugondy French World Globe 1745 w/ Stand 19.70" Desk Decor This replica Vaugondy French world globe is brand new and
is very skillfully made. It measures overall 12.60" inches in width x 19.70" inches tall.
This Vaugondy French 1745 Globe is made of copperplate printed
gores (specially shaped map sections) modeled after the actual 16th
Century original cartographers globe. The gores are cut and applied by
hand on papier-mache globe spheres. The
globe is meticulously handcrafted using the complicated ‘gravure’
printing process that results in the sharpest details, lines and
symbols. The globe stand is made of wood with a chrome metal arm. The stand has an antiqued distressed honey French finish.
This
terrestrial globe is a design from a globe by the french cartographers
(map maker) Gilles Robert de Vaugondy and Didier Robert de Vaugondy.
Gilles Robert de Vaugondy also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and
his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy were leading mapmakers in France
during the 1700s.
The Vaugondys produced their maps and terrestrial globes working
together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes (the largest
being over 8' in diameter) were made by gluing copperplate printed gores
on a papier mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing
process. Didier was appointed geographer to Louis XV in 1760. This beautiful Vaugondy old world globe is sure to become a conversational addition to your nautical desk top decor. - Overall Size: 12.60" x 19.70" Height
