Information about musicians and work
The Jackson Five (also The Jackson 5) and later The Jacksons was an American soul band that had its greatest successes in the 1970s.
The band was founded in 1964 as "The Jackson Brothers" by Joseph Jackson and initially consisted of his sons Jackie, Tito and Jermaine Jackson. Their brothers Marlon and Michael Jackson joined in 1966, after which the band was renamed The Jackson Five. The initially seven-year-old Michael became the lead singer.
The Jackson Five quickly celebrated their first small successes, including winning several talent competitions. A short time later they got their first record deal with the small label Steeltown Records. However, radio stations hardly played the first songs like "Big Boy", so that their first record in 1968 on Steeltown was their last.
1969 was followed by a record deal with Motown, the then most important US soul label alongside Stax Records, and an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on December 14, 1969, which brought the Jacksons their national breakthrough. The first hit "I Want You Back", with a total of two million records sold, went to number 1 on the US Billboard charts, as did the three following songs "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "I'll be there".
In the early 1970s, the Jackson Five went on a world tour for the first time. In all, they released 13 albums on Motown by mid-1975.
Separation from Motown and name change
After splitting up with Motown Records, they got a new record deal with Epic Records in the spring of 1976 and called themselves "The Jacksons" from then on, since the old naming rights were still with Motown. Jermaine stayed at Motown and was replaced by Randy. Motown was known for having songs written exclusively by professional songwriters. The brothers had the opportunity to be creative themselves at Epic.
The Jacksons is the eleventh studio album by the Jacksons, the band's first album for Epic/CBS and under the moniker The Jacksons after their seven-year tenure with Motown as The Jackson 5. Jackson 5 member Jermaine Jackson stayed with Motown when his brothers broke their contracts and went to Epic, and he was replaced by youngest Jackson brother, Randy. The album was released in 1976 for Epic Records and Philadelphia International Records as a joint venture.
Philadelphia International masterminds Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff produced the album, including their first Top Ten hit in two years "Enjoy Yourself", but struggled to focus on a sound for the now-adult boy band. However, the group was able to record their own material for the first time, which they had been denied at Motown. The Jacksons composed "Style of Life" and "Blues Away" alone. "Blues Away" was the first released song from singer Michael Jackson, who took a more percussive vocal approach from that album onwards. This album also spawned a second successful R&B single, "Show You the Way to Go" (UK No.1). However, the song remained the only No. 1 hit on Epic. Although never released as a single, "Good Times" became a popular track, being cut from regular, quiet Storm airplay. The album itself placed at #36 and #6 on the pop and R&B albums charts respectively.
The album was the Jacksons' first gold album, although they had sold more than 10 million albums at Motown (Motown's sales and financial records were not submitted for scrutiny by the RIAA until 1976). Her world tours in the late 1970s and early 1980s were groundbreaking. The Jacksons' songs were no longer the chart-toppers they used to be, but they were still successful worldwide.
