Long before Bob Marley made his mark on the world, changing it forever, this duo had one of the first international reggae hits ever, the delightfully daffy "Double Barrel." Featuring an echo-laden voice declaring, in a good-natured, boastful way, "I am the magnificent!" to a bouncy reggae groove and shimmering organ, it became a Top 40 hit in the USA and England.
The group's one and only album features that title cut single, many fine, easy-going reggae instrumentals that are heavy on the organ and the blue-sharp horns, along with a few soulful vocals tunes. (The horns and vocals display the heavy influence of Southern American soul/R&B on Jamaican music, especially reggae.) Keyboard player Ansel Collins would go on to play with the Upsetters, Black Uhuru and Jimmy Cliff's band, among others. DOUBLE BARREL is highly recommended to fans of early 1970s reggae.
