DATE PRINTED: c.1874. Difficult to date exactly but Virtue became a limited Co in 1875.

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 23 x 30 cm, 9 x 12 inches (medium) plus margins . 

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and engraved by W. Hughes. William Hughes FRGS (1818 – 21 May 1876) was an English geographer, mapmaker and author. He was Professor of Geography at King's College and Queen's College, London and Royal Female Naval School.

PROVENANCE: Published by James S. Virtue & Co., London.

TYPE: Antique tinted lithographic printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

CONDITION: Good, suitable for framing.  Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:   James Sprent Virtue (1829–1892) was born on 18 May, at 26 Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row, London, the second of George who was also a well known map producer. James Virtue was based in, and ran, the United States business from 1848 to 1855, until he returned to England to succeed his father. In 1892 he died of heart disease, at his London home and was buried  at St Mary's, Walton-on-Thames.
