It is carnival in south-western Germany: On the streets of Endingen and Sachsenheim, Kissleg and Singen, Wilfingen and Triberg, the elaborate and lavish costumes of the Swabian-Alemannic tradition are paraded.The fashion and portrait photographer Axel Hoedt from the area of Breisgau in Germany shows the carnival revellers and their disguises beyond established clichés and radically breaks with carnival iconography. No breath taking somersaults in front of the crowds and romantic timber framework, no crazy goings-on but revellers in earnest pose, in front of a bright background, in a forest or in front of customary functional buildings. Classical studio shots, Polaroid snapshots and still life images are juxtaposed. Hoedt regularly confronts the quaint masks with the wintry-rigid scenery impressions and reminds us of what carnival used to be: a last jamboree before the dawning of hard times. È carnevale nella Germania sud-occidentale: per le strade di Endingen, Sachsenheim, Kissleg, Singen, Wilfingen e Triberg, sfilano gli elaborati e sontuosi costumi della tradizione svevo-alemanna. Il fotografo di moda e di ritratti Axel Hoedt della zona di Breisgau mostra i festaioli del carnevale e i loro travestimenti oltre i cliché stabiliti e rompe radicalmente con l'iconografia del carnevale. Nessuna capriola da togliere il fiato davanti alla folla e alla romantica struttura in legno, nessuna follia, ma festaioli in posa seria, davanti a uno sfondo luminoso, in una foresta o davanti a edifici banali. Scatti classici da studio, istantanee Polaroid e immagini di still life vengono giustapposti. Hoedt mette regolarmente a confronto le maschere pittoresche con le impressioni di scenari invernali e rigidi e ci ricorda cosa era il carnevale: l'ultima festa prima dell'alba dei tempi duri.
