Voyages of Chastellux MAPS Revolutionary WAR French Washington
“the first trustworthy record of life in
the United States!” (Howes)
François Jean de Chastellux was an 18th-century French
military officer who served under George Washington during the American
Revolution. Chastellux was an important figure in the French forces
particularly at the Siege of Yorktown. The events of his experiences in the
Revolutionary War were published in his book ‘Voyages’. While a dozen or so copies of this book were published
years prior, the first authorized edition was published in 1786 by Prault.
According to Clark,
“This journal is one of the most notable of
American travel accounts of the Revolutionary period not only because of
Chastellux's keen observation and directness of his narrative but also because
of his acute comments on society and the character of the people in different
walks of life.”
This second volume includes four folding engravings including both maps!
