Safflower oil is dark yellow, orange in color. Native to the East, this plant exists in the wild in Asia, Japan, Australia, South and Central America. It is cultivated in the Mediterranean basin thanks to the coloring property of its flowers, while in Asia and Latin America, one exploits rather its oleaginous fruit.
Safflower is also known as "Dyer safflower". For centuries, it was cultivated in Europe for its yellow and red carthamine dyes especially. It is a plant that is satisfied with very little water, and can therefore grow in arid climatic conditions, even desert.

Safflower oil is rich in linoleic and oleic acids. It nourishes dry skin, and is used in many cosmetic preparations for hair care. It is traditionally used as a massage oil. It has emollient and moisturizing properties.
