Jill Scott (* 4. April 1972 in Philadelphia) ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin des Jazz, Rhythm and Blues und Soul. Sie ist dreifache Grammy-Gewinnerin. Musikalisch reiht sich Jill Scott mit den Künstlerinnen Erykah Badu, India.Arie und Angie Stone ein, die als Vertreterinnen des Neo-Soul gelten.
Jill Scott ist im US-amerikanischen Philadelphia geboren und aufgewachsen. Bereits in der 8. Klasse schreibt sie erste Gedichte. Dann beginnt sie diese zu vertonen. Auf einer Veranstaltung wird sie vom Roots-Drummer Ahmir Khalib Thompson entdeckt. Gemeinsam schreiben sie den Song You Got Me, der im Jahr 1999 zum Welthit avanciert und einen Grammy für die beste Rap-Performance erhält.
Im Jahr 2000 erscheint ihr Debütalbum Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, das mit zwei Platin-Schallplatten geehrt wird und ihr drei Grammy-Nominierungen einbringt. Jill Scott (born April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia) is an American jazz, rhythm and blues and soul singer. She is a three-time Grammy winner. Musically, Jill Scott joins the artists Erykah Badu, India.Arie and Angie Stone, who are considered representatives of neo-soul.
Jill Scott was born and raised in Philadelphia, USA. Already in the 8th grade she writes her first poems. Then she begins to set them to music. At an event she is discovered by Roots drummer Ahmir Khalib Thompson. Together they write the song You Got Me, which became a worldwide hit in 1999 and received a Grammy for best rap performance.
In 2000 her debut album Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, which went two platinum records and earned her three Grammy nominations. In the same year she received the Aretha Franklin Award for Entertainer of the Year. Jill Scott collaborates with Common, Eric Benét and Will Smith. In 2001 the double CD Experience: Jill Scott was released, consisting of live recordings and new pieces.
Her next album, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2, came out in 2004, which also earned her a Grammy and a gold record. She is honored again at the 2005 Grammy Awards, this time for Best R&B Solo Vocal Performance. In 2007, after a concert in Zurich, the press praised her virtuosity and vocal power.
