Attention Collectors!!!

You are bidding on a super rare hardcover book titled Art De La Guerre, par Principes et par Règles. Ouvrage de M. le Maréchal de Puységur, mis au jour par M. le Marquis de Puységur son Fils, Maréchal des Camps & Armées du Roy. The book is in French as originally published.

Translating the title into English:

The Art of War, its Principles and Rules. The Work of the Marshal of Puysegur, Discovered by his Son, the Marquis of Puysegur, Marshal of the Royal Camps and Armies. Dedicated to the King. This is Volume II only of a two volume set.

This title was originally published in 1748, this work was published posthumously (the author died in 1743), and is a tactician's thoughts on the merits of the suppression of pikes and muskets in favor of the bayonet rifle. This volume was published in Paris, Quai Des Augustins, Chez Charles - Antoine Jombert, Libraire du Roy pour l'Artillerie & le Genie, a l'Image Notre Dame, 1749.

That's right, this book is from 1749!!!!

The book has many terrific fold-out illustrations of battle maps.

The book features full leather binding. It measures approximately 10" high and 8" wide. The spine features five raised bands with gold titling on red morocco leather and ornate gold decoration in the spine compartments. The covers are securely attached with no cracking or splitting of hinges.

The pages are made of hand-laid paper. All pages are tightly bound and have very little foxing. There are decorative end pages/flyleaves. The paste down endpages show some loss but not significant. Rear of book has Table of Subjects. The rear flyleaf is missing. The last page in the book is number 528. It does not say "Finis" on the page so I am not certain if there are any pages missing at the end. (If there are any pages missing, it would be from the Table of Subjects, not the important text pages of the work). The outside page edges are red.

This is an extremely rare antique book in good condition.

Also adding to the value of this book is the provenance. On the front cover, it has gold lettering indicating that it once belonged to Regiment De Piemont. The Piedmont regiment is an infantry regiment of the Kingdom of France , created in 1569 under the name of Brissac regiment , is one of the oldest military units, one of the five Old, which became from the Revolution the 3rd  line infantry regiment .

This is a terrific book to add to a collection!

Great gift idea!
