What are watermelon tourmalines?

All gems in the tourmaline family are mixed crystals of aluminium boron silicate that also contain elements such as iron, manganese, sodium, lithium, or potassium. While tourmaline was first discovered in Brazil in the 16th century, the green crystals were initially confused with emerald. It was not until the 19th century that the gem was classified as tourmaline.

This is a highly collectable gemstone due to its wide array of colours.

It is the watermelon tourmaline that is probably one of the better known colours, due to its very distinct colour combination.

Generally you will find these beautiful tourmalines with a very obvious split of colour. Not all of them do, this one in particular is mainly green but as you see in the photographs, there is a beautiful part of pink.
