This Confederate States of America War Bond was found at a flea market in Paris, France about 20 years ago.  With much of Europe sympathetic to the Confederate States, specimens like this occasionally turn up in Europe.

This bond has stampings generally not found on documents that had been held by bondholders in the Southern States.  The stamping seen on the right front corner is not clear enough to make out.  The stamp found on the back indicates that this document was in Amsterdam on August 15, 1865.  The full significance of these stampings is not known, but are presumed to have been made by the bondholder.  Both are shown in the photos.

This $1000 Civil War bond was issued on March 1, 1864 by the Confederate States of America, authorized by an Act of Congress of February 17th of 1864.

The bond measures about 26" by 14-3/4".  As shown in the photos it has 59 of the 60 coupons attached.  It has been folded but is free of any cracks or tears.

The document was printed by Evans & Cogswell of Columbia, South Carolina.  It features an plate engraving of the statue of George Washington located at Richmond.  The artwork was done by J. Archer of Richmond.

The bond was signed by E. Apperson, Registrar of the Treasury.  The coupons were signed by Robert Tyler (1816-1877).
