Hardcover book, no dust jacket present, half-leather front/rear covers, leather is worn and cracked especially on extremities and front/rear joints and spine face, marbled paper covers the remainder of the front/rear cover surfaces, this is also worn on extremities, top edge surface is gold gilt, spine face surface has gold gilt lettering and decoration and frayed missing pieces of the head and foot, binding is very solid and complete for the book’s age, interior is clean with very slight odor though no moisture damage is evident, pencil marks on surfaces of front end pages.

Overall condition of the book is Good - near Good +. Book’s subtitled: “ ITS NATURE, ITS EVIDENCES, AND ITS RELATION TO RELIGIOUS THOUGHT.” The author, Joseph Le Conte, was a Professor of Geology and Natural History in the University of California. Born in Georgia in 1823, he was a physician, professor and conservationist. He attended Franklin College at the University of Georgia, New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Harvard University. He was an avid traveler, using his travels to pique his curiosity about the natural world and evolution. He was also a believer in the theory of Theistic Evolution, and an early conservationist. He passed away in Yosemite Valley, California, in 1901. This edition of this work, while having some condition concerns, is still in very nice collectible condition, also suitable for gifting.
