"Freedom’s Gate,” chronicles the dramatic story of John Kulhan's World War II service in the Czechoslovak Army and beyond.
As a Slovak lieutenant Kulhan fought under Gen. Ludvik Svoboda against Hitler’s Nazi regime. Kulhan survived the bloody Battle of Dukla Pass in the fall of 1944 that drove the Nazis from his homeland. He saved Svoboda’s life and almost lost his own in the liberation of Prague, according to the memoir.
After the war, Kulhan fought against the Soviet regime. Forced to flee Czechoslovakia, he left behind his pregnant wife, Marta, and their infant daughter. He sneaked back into the country and smuggled his family across the Austrian mountains, the memoir recounts.
