This is a fine bone china slops bowl made by Chapmans Longton Ltd, England, under the Standard trademark with a backstamp that was used in the 1930 and 1949.
A slops bowl, slops basin or waste bowl is one of the components of a traditional tea set. It was used to empty the cold tea and dregs in tea cups before refilling with hot tea, as there were often tea leaves in the bottom of the cups. Before the mid 20th century, there was often no ceramic sugar bowl provided with a tea or coffee set as households would have a silver/silver plated sugar bowl. Slops bowls are often misdescribed as sugar bowls but are larger than the average sugar bowls accompanying ceramic tea/coffee sets.
Chapmans Longton Ltd, was owned by Thomas C Wild and William Thomas Chapman, famously the makers of Royal Albert. Chapmans was among the most well known Staffordshire pottery companies, and was based at the Albert Works, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. Chapmans Longton Ltd, had three trademarks: Standard China used between 1916 and 1930; Royal Mayfair used on bone china from 1938 to 1941; and Royal Standard used from 1949 and perhaps the company’s best known trademark. Chapmans Longton Ltd closed in 1966 when Allied English Potteries (who in 1964 had acquired the Wild companies) reorganised production.
