Antique Celluloid Kushi-Kanzashi Hair Ornament
This item came from the Gion Kobu Geisha District of Kyoto. It is made of a vintage type of translucent celluloid that mimics tortoise shell.
It ia probably 60-80 years old. It Measures: 9cm (3½") in length.
Weight: 23g
It is in good condition with a few minor chips to the teeth and edge.
Kanzashi like this are normally not used as a comb but rather worn as an ornament in the hair.
Note that the teeth of antique combs occasionally contain a kind of wax called “Bintsuke Abura” which is used to shape “Nihongami" hairstyles - it is often possible to remove it if you are careful not to damage the lacquer.
