Was ist so besonders an Bay Rum?

Laut Hersteller ist es als Aftershave einsetzbar, ebenso wie als Haarwasser, Hauttonikum und Apres-Sun Lotion. All diese Vorteile in nur einem Produkt? Der perfekte Alleskönner im Bereich Männerpflege, zusammen mit Rasierer, Zahnputzzeug und Nagelschere wäre Mann von heute somit komplett bedient.

Verwendet man das Mittel als After Shave, gibt es kein unangenehmes Brennen, keine Hautrötungen, dafür eine babyweiche Haut. Der Duft, angenehm herb und etwas an Gewürznelken erinnernd, verflüchtigt sich relativ rasch, überig bleibt das angenehm weiche Hautfeeling. Als Hauteinreibung nach dem Bad bzw. nach der Dusche stellt sich selbiger Effekt ein: zart weiche Haut und dazu eine äußerst erfrischende und belebende Wirkung. Herstellung & Inhalt

BAY RUM stammt von der namengebenden Karibikinsel Dominica, wo er seit 1907 nach Originalrezepten nur mit reinstem, doppelt destilliertem Alkohol (55,5%) - auf der Grundlage von feinstem Jamaica-Rum -, klarem Wasser und wohltuenden Pflanzenextrakten - hautpflegenden Auszügen des Bay-Baumes (westindischer Lorbeer) - hergestellt wird. Er ist naturrein und ungefärbt.

Der verhältnismäßig moderate Alkoholanteil (andere Rasierwasser enthalten bis zu 85% Alkohol!) sorgt dafür, daß man kein rauhbeiniger Freibeuter sein muß, um ihn aufzutragen. Nach verletzungsfreier Rasur ist kein Brennen zu befürchten. Der Extrakt von Pimenta racemosa, dem Bay-Baum (verwendet werden Blätter und Früchte), hat erfrischende und desinfizierende Wirkung und schließt die Poren, ohne die Haut besonders stark auszutrocknen, ideal für ein Aftershave.

Bay oder Westindischer Lorbeer (Pimenta racemosa, Pimenta acris, Myrcia acris, Eugenia acris) ist eine Pflanze aus der Familie der Myrtengewächse (Myrtaceae). Der robuste, immergrüne Strauch oder Baum kann bis über 20 m hoch werden, wird zur Ölproduktion allerdings max. 4 m hoch, damit er leichter geerntet werden kann. Er ist ein naher Verwandter des Pimentbaums. Verwendet werden die Blätter, die ätherisches Öl enthalten, das durch Destillation gewonnen wird. Hauptkomponente des Öls ist Eugenol, das auch in der Gewürznelke (Syzygium aromaticum) zu finden ist. Zusätzlich enthält es Estragol. Bayöl wurde um 1900 zur Pflege der Kopfhaut verwendet und galt als Haarwuchsmittel, zuvor schätzen viele Männer das Bayblatt-Destillat allerdings bereits als After Shave. Der Duft dieses mit Nelkenpfeffer verwandten Myrtengewächs ist dem der Gewürznelke ähnlich, aber viel feiner, und er vereinigt sich mit dem Aroma des Rums zu einer erstaunlichen Komposition. Als Haarwasser wirke er gegen Schuppen und gebe dem Haar Glanz und Seidigkeit, als Badezusatz sei er reinigend und durchblutungsfördernd.

Verwendung & Eigenschaften

Früher war Bay Rum weltweit sehr verbreitet, wurde dann aber von "moderneren" Düften verdrängt. In unseren Breiten kennen heute nur wenige dieses Vielzweckmittel (und handeln es als Geheimtip), in der Karibik und den Südstaaten der USA ist es nach wie vor ein vielfach angewandtes Reinigungs- und Erfrischungsmittel.

Bay Rum schützt die Gesichtshaut vor Wind und Wetter, nach sportlichen Anstrengungen entkrampft es die Muskeln und nach dem Rasieren beruhigt es als After Shave und parfümiert.

Heute wird es auch nach dem Bad oder der Sauna als anregende Einreibung verwendet, ebenso nach dem Sport, bei Muskelkater oder Verspannungen. Weitere Verwendungen sind die erste Hilfe nach Insektenstichen, kleinen Schnitten oder Abschürfungen, als kühlende Beruhigung nach Sonnenbrand, der Gebrauch als Haarwasser, für die Fußmassage oder als Badezusatz.

Der Geruch ist völlig anders als parfümbasierte Aftershaves -- würzig (erinnert an Gewürznelken), leicht, frisch und rein, der in der heutigen Zeit nicht unbedingt jeder Nase gefällt, erinnert es doch eher an die 30er Jahre und die Zeiten "rauer" Männer. Ist der Duft aber auch anfangs ungewohnt, so wirkt das Aroma dennoch nie aufdringlich oder störend sondern wird schnell als sehr angenehm empfunden.

Bay Rum protects the skin of the face from wind and weather, it relaxes the muscles after sporting exertion, and after shaving it soothes and perfumes as an after-shave.

Today, it is also used after a bath or sauna as a stimulating rub, as well as after sports, for sore muscles or tension. Other uses include first aid after insect bites, minor cuts or abrasions, as a cooling soother after sunburn, use as a hair tonic, for foot massage or as a bath additive.

The scent is completely different from perfume-based aftershaves -- spicy (reminiscent of cloves), light, fresh and pure, which may not appeal to everyone's nose in this day and age, as it is more reminiscent of the 1930s and the days of "rough" men. But even if the scent is unusual at first, the aroma never seems intrusive or annoying, but is quickly perceived as very pleasant.
