WWII Trench Art. Canada 🇨🇦  22ieme Regiment "Van Doos" Wooden Platter. UNIQUE..

An absolute treasure to behold. Well crafted and rich in  the story of one of the most lauded regiments in Canadian Military history.

This appears to be piece of folkcraft that was either:

a) commissioned for one of the advancing, then occupying troops of the  Canadian Army that advanced up the "soft underbelly" of Europe in 1943 and 1944.?

Or?

b) Carved by a soldier of the 22ieme who practiced  the woodcraft so well respected in Quebec.

Uncertain as to the wood used. Maple? Pine?

Note: As per photos, there as been notching in each corner of the "plaque". Perhaps regimental buttons are collar badges were to be mounted by the artisan later? They seem intentional.

Also, the carving has been skillfully repaired in the past using hook- nails or staples. It does not compromise the integrity of the piece.
