1699 1ed Idylls of
Theocritus Ancient Greek Poetry Latin & Greek Scaliger Oxford
Theocritus was a 3rd-century
BC Greek poet best known for writing pastoral poems. In fact, his Idylls are
considered to be the first pastoral poems. They are still widely read today,
much in part to fine 17th-century examples such as this 1699 Oxford
printing. This particular edition is considerably noteworthy – it features both
Latin and original Greek texts with translations and annotated notes by Joseph
Scaliger, Isaac Casaubon, and Daniel Heinsius.
