1938 Press Photo Child actor Jackie Coogan and mother Lilian Coogan Bernstein

This is an original press photo. Jackie Coogan, "The Kid" of silent movies as a child actor, and his mother, Mrs. Lilian Coogan Bernstein, are pictured together before an estrangement over his screen earnings which resulted in his filing a suit at Los Angeles for an accounting of $4 million from her and his stepfather, Arthur L. Bernstein. In his complaint, Coogan, now 22 and married to actress Betty Grable, alleged he had been deprived of all his property by his mother and her second husband who was the adviser of his father, John H. Coogan, before the latter's death in an automobile accident in 1935. Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 4-14-1938.
