A WW1 Bedfordshire Trench Art Desk Lighter

This is a First World War trench art piece made of an artillery shell.

The piece comprises of three components:

The led solded lid bearing a nice quality brass and enamel officers collar badge.

The igniter section, manufactured from a smaller shell section in order to be inserted into the main body.

The main body of the lighter, made of a lower section of a shell case, with a layer of led on the bottom so it won’t scratch the table.

*The Bedfordshire Regiment (formerly the 16th Regiment of Foot)*

During the First World War the Bedfordshire Regiment was engaged on The Western Front, Italy, Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine.

The regiment’s two ‘Regular’ infantry battalions, its single ‘Territorial’ battalion and two ‘Reserve’ battalions were supplemented by many ‘New Army’ battalions when War broke out in 1914.

A total of twenty-one infantry battalions served within the regiment between 1914 and 1918, being posted at home, on the Western Front, in northern Italy, the Middle East, India and Burma during the war.

The regiment’s soldiers achieved incredible feats during the war and were awarded around 1,000 gallantry and bravery medals including seven Victoria Crosses.

The lighter is in good condition with minimal age marks.

It may require a new igniter stone, as it doesn’t spark.
