Born
in 1949 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Gable studied fine art at the
University of Saskatchewan and education at the University of Toronto.
In the 1970s, he became a freelance editorial cartoonist for the
Brockville Recorder and Times while teaching art in Brockville,
Ontario.
Gable
was hired full time by the Regina Leader-Post in 1980 and worked there
for seven years before joining The Globe and Mail where he has been the
editorial cartoonist for more than three decades. For his talents, Gable
has won seven National Newspaper Awards and was inducted into the Order
of Canada. Gable has also illustrated dozens of children’s books,
including two well-known educational series, Words are CATegorical and
Math is CATegorical, which aim to teach the basics of grammar and
mathematics through wildly energetic cat cartoon drawings.
