The following item is an authentic First National Bank of Gettysburg check from 1881. This check is made out to Henry J. Stahle, who at the time of The Battle of Gettysburg was the Editor of The Gettysburg Compiler. His Democratic newspaper had much opposition in Gettysburg and during the first day at Gettysburg, Stahle was arrested for "Copperhead Treason" for providing information to a Confederate Colonel. He was sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. He was subsequently released. Stahle was a staunch Democrat and was a large supporter of George McClellan when he ran for president. There were a number of people in Gettysburg who disliked him and his newspaper and he claimed he was slandered in the claims against him. The claim ended up coming from David McConaughy, a Republican from Gettysburg. McConaughy played a large role in the creation of both Soldiers National Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg. This check was made out by Henry J. Fahnestock Jr. The Fahnestocks ran a mercantile business in Gettysburg during The Civil War. They were partners with Daniel Skelly, brother of Jack Skelly who was engaged to Jennie Wade. The check is signed by Stahle on the reverse in dark period ink. It is in very good condition. Another great collectible with strong ties to The Battle of Gettysburg.
