This is a second printing thus of Conan the Wanderer by Robert E. Howard, published in 1976 by Sphere Books in the UK.

The 12 Lancer / Ace Conan books stemmed from a lawsuit by L. Sprague de Camp against the publisher of Gnome Press, who had developed a habit of withholding payment from authors of books; in most cases, the authors were not wealthy enough to pursue legal action.  The publisher refused compensation to de Camp for the five Conan books he'd edited, claiming that payment should be distributed only to the author, Robert E. Howard - despite Howard being long deceased.  de Camp's lawyer recommended he seek a paperback contract to not simply reprint the works from the books but to incorporate new stories which could be completed from existing fragments Howard had written.  The extra editing added weight to the court case, resulting in de Camp getting paid as well as opening the door for many other Gnome Press authors receiving their royalties.

The paperback editions - 11 of which were published by Lancer, with the final book, Conan of Aquilonia, published by Ace following the closure of Lancer Books - were immensely popular and revitalized interest in Conan, who at that time had become a footnote in pulp magazine history.  Comics, movies, book series and merchandising followed, making Conan internationally popular.
