5 Pounds Connecticut Pay of 1789 signed R. Pomeroy with Super Low Serial # 419

1) Signer Ralph Pomeroy (1737-1819) had written to President George Washington in 1789 with his resume (mentioning his Military Service as a First Lieutenant in the Continental Army during the Revolution etc) seeking employment in the Federal Government. He did not get the job!

2) This 5 Shillings Connecticut Pay form was printed by Barzillai Hudson & George Goodwin (Owners of the Hartford Courant - inherited the newspaper after marrying the deceased boss' daughter) who were sued by Thomas Jefferson & Congress for libel arising from the comment that France's Napoleon got 2 Million Dollars to force a treaty with Spain. Hudson & Goodwin won the case.

3) So, you think that they could not cut a straight line (on the left edge)? This uneven cut was made so as to match up with an original opposite template to assure the document was not a forgery, as 5 Pounds in 1789 was worth more than a pretty penny!

Measures approx 7 x 2.5"
