LUDWIG HERCULES VTG 1979 Model 1023 Drum Stool Throne Seat Project or Parts AS-IS RARE READ

Comments: This is a historic collector's item made in Chicago. It was introduced at the same time as Tivoli light drum sets. It's a collectible and not aimed at someone who needs something to sit on. If you don't have passion for Ludwig USA and you're not a Ludwig collector this likely isn't what you want.

In the late 70's (78-79) Ludwig introduced this throne. It was a game changer. It was comfortable for any size drummer and nearly indestructible. Unheard of for stools at that time. I purchased it in 1979. I can tell you it was shockingly expensive. That's probably why there are none around. Ludwig likely didn't sell a ton of them. They first appeared in the Ludwig catalog in 1980. For myself it changed the way I played.

*The upper tube isn't a tube. It's 7/8"dia solid steel.

*The lower tube is a robust 1 1/2"OD

*The 3 upright tubes are 1/2"OD tubular.

*The braces at the base are 5/32" thick double braces.

*The 2 castings at the top and base of the uprights are solid. (Possibly high quality aluminum?*)

*Approximate weight without packaging 11lbs 9oz

Condition: No modifications. All original components. The riveting is original and all are sound. There is some play in the joints as would be expected but not a lot. The upper tube is marked up from adjustments. Mostly on it's flat "business" side. It's roll pin is fine. The T Handle on the height adjustment is the rare 3/8"dia Hercules and it's thread is in VG condition. It's plastic handle is pocked up but not cracked. See photo. Just this part is a rarity itself.

All 3 rubber feet are all worn out. One is foreign (not Ludwig)  They all need to be replaced. You can check to see if you might buy some from my store. Both The seat vinyl and the seat foam need to be replaced. I have purposely left the unusable foam and vinyl on to make replacement style, density and measurements easy for any drum or upholstery shop.

The underside metal platform's black finish has some scratches, minor dents and minor rust. It and the two black castings need refinishing. The bracket with three arms that screws through to the wood base is missing it's knob (Ludwig part P2673.) As well the threads in the bracket are stripped. It could be solid aluminum?* or a hard alloy Ludwig used for mounting seats on their other thrones. The seat bracket has friction wear from use. I would line the interior of the receiving bracket (valve style) or line the exterior of the upper tube (piston style) to reduce the play. The upper tube being solid hard steel has little friction wear.

---*I'm not certain Ludwig used aluminum or another alloy for these 3 parts. It's just a guess. The two black parts that receive the braces may even be machined and not castings at all. They're hard metal with the color of aluminum. If it is aluminum it could be of aircraft type. I don't know. Please check with a Ludwig historian if it is important.---
