100 AMAZING SHARK VERTEBRATES FROM PREHISTORIC, THUS EXTINCT SHARK, OTODUS OBLIQUUS. Otodus shark is known to be the original ancestor of the well known Carcharodon Megaladon, and was the king of the EARLY EOCENE period of MOROCCO (47 to 54 millions years ago).
The scientific classification for Otodus is as follows:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Chondrichthyes
Order: Lamniformes
Family: Otodontidae
Genus: Otodus
The length of each specimen ranges 3/4" to 1/2".
Teeth were professionally hardened for durability, but as pictured, teeth are sometimes missing their tips, nicked or repaired.
The most notable attribute of this fish are the large "fangs" at the front of the upper and lower jaws and on the palatine bones, leading to its misleading nickname of "saber-toothed herring". These fangs, along with a long sleek body and large eyes, suggest Enchodus was a predatory species.
These are VERY NICE PIECE to add to your fossil collection.
