INDIA - "Gupta" - Ar Fractional Drachm - Four Coins


 A Gupta Succession state of Northern Malwa Circa Late 5th Century AD 


These coins have few markings, mainly dots and lines on the obverse and plain on the reverse 


Cat: Sim. Mitchiner ACW #4905-09 Cond: Generally VF, Typical size - Diam: 12 mm, Wt: 0.8 gm 


The following text is taken from Mitchiner "Ancient and Classical World" pub. 1978: 

"Coins of this type were first published by Cunningham (Achaeol. Survey of India, 1872-73 p.104) from a find made at Bavanni on the Ravva near Harappa. A more recent find of these coins, now in the possession of Mr. Santosh Kumar of Delhi, is said to have come from the village of Jeera in the Punjab. The coins were probably struck by a local dynast who carved out his realm during the period of conflict between Guptas and Hephthalites".


 These relatively unusual coins were purchased by the seller from the very same Mr Santosh Kumar in the early 1980's
