Chulucanas is a town in Morropon Province in the Piura Region of Peru, and is famous for its unique style of pottery. From its beginnings this style of pottery has been made by hand with the denominated "Paleteado" technique, which dates from pre-Inca times and is specific to the region. This technique consists of forming the clay with a simple wooden palette and a rounded stone, beating it rhythmically to give it its form. Colouring is by hand using natural pigments and clays, after which the pieces are refined by rubbing a soft river stone over the surface until the characteristic sheen is achieved. Once dry the pieces are fired with locust firewood to a temperature of 900C in adobe brick ovens. Dark, or black, pieces are fired at low temperature in the smoke of mango leaves. It should be noted that these pieces are unglazed and for decorative purpose only - vases are not suitable for fresh flowers - water will seep through!
