McIntosh MVP851 Audio Upsampling CD Player w/24-Bit Burr Brown Audio DACs

McIntosh MVP851 Audio Upsampling CD Player w/24-Bit Burr Brown Audio DACs

Not only will it play CD's, but it will also upsample all of your CD's using McIntosh exclusive built-in "Digital Re-Master Processing".

Plus many high resolution audio recordings were only released on DVD-Audio which this unit will play. DVD-A / DVD-Audio was the competing format that lost to SACD in the disc-based Hi-Res Audio format wars.

Featuring balanced XLR analog outputs as well as optical and coaxial digital outputs in case you'd like to provide your own outboard DAC.

While the video section in this McIntosh is a bit outdated it's still an *excellent* McIntosh CD player.

Tested and working just like it should in our lab and listening area.  Condition is super clean with only the slightest signs of use.

Performance Features Include:

• Advanced Transport

The MVP851 has a new Disc Stabilizer with a honeycomb structure made from glass reinforced Polyphenylene Ether and helps the playback of warped discs. It utilizes a Transport with the advanced digital servo for faster, quieter and accurate operation.

• DVD-Audio Playback

The MVP851 also plays DVD-Audio Discs that have higher resolution sound quality, plus the capability of multichannel sound reproduction.

• 24 BIT Burr Brown Audio DAC

The MVP851 built-in Burr Brown Digital to Analog Converters are capable of sampling rates up to 192KHz with 24 Bits of resolution. There is one two channel 192kHz/24-bit DAC for the best sound quality in stereo reproduction from a DVD-Audio Disc and three two channel 96kHz/24-bit DACs for DVDs with six channel audio.

• Balanced Outputs

The MVP851 has Balanced Outputs for the Left and Right Channels when playing an Audio CD. When a Multichannel DVD disc is playing, the Balanced Left and Right Out- puts contains a mix down of the Multichannel Sound.

• Digital Re-Master Processing

The optional Digital Re-Mastering Enhancement Circuitry in the MVP851 can improve the sound quality from Audio CDs by extending the frequency response beyond 20kHz.

• Digital Audio Outputs

There are Coaxial and Optical Digital Outputs for external decoding of Dolby Digital, DTS Digital Signals, PCM or MP3 Signals from Audio CDs.

The SkyFi Testing Process for CD Players:

We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect resistors and other passive components for signs of overheating. When the unit is first powered on we check the drawer mechanism function.

After the visual inspection we connect the CD Player’s RCA outputs to our Sencore PA81 Power Analyzer which simulates a real world input impedance and allows us to monitor the output on an oscilloscope. We start with a test CD with precision test signals to verify proper output on both channels. If the CD player has balanced outputs these are also tested at this time. If this check passes, we move onto evaluation with actual music CDs. We listen for clicks, skips, and drops during playback. At this time we also check the transport functions including skip, ff, rw, play, pause, repeat, and programming if applicable. If the unit has a remote control, all remote control functions are verified.

If the CD player is capable of SACD playback we test its ability to read SACD layers on multiple discs including standard and hybrid SACDs. At this time we also check the unit’s digital outputs where applicable. If SACD layers are being properly read we should see the digital outputs mute during playback. On redbook CD playback we verify that each digital output maintains proper lock on our bench DAC.

After bench testing is completed, CD players are set up for testing on our long term test rig. During extended testing we make sure that unit can play through several different discs from beginning to end with no skips or lock ups.

SkyFi Audio - Curators of Vintage Audio Gear

SkyFi Audio is a small startup business specializing in the purchase, reconditioning, and reselling of high end audio equipment. We only buy equipment that we admire and are passionate about. No mid-fi, no gimmicks, no junk.

Each piece of equipment is cosmetically restored and fully tested in our well-equipped lab by an engineer with 30+ years of experience in the HiFi world. If it does not meet or exceed the original manufactures specifications, it will not be sold. We are very selective about the equipment we purchase, focusing on mostly analog, high-build quality, American, and European built units.

Through our sister company, which is an authorized dealer for McIntosh, Audio Research, Sonus Faber, ClearAudio, Project, and Sony ES, we have access to OEM parts, service, and support.
