Jersey Royal potatoes are one of the best potato varieties we've tried!

Grown exclusively on the island of Jersey for over 140 years - over half of the land on Jersey used to be devoted solely to growing these potatoes! - Jersey Royal potatoes are renowned for their flavour. The farmers believe their excellent sweet yet earthy flavour comes from the way they are grown: not only are they cultivated on steep fields along the coast, meaning they benefit from a combination of sunshine, salty breezes, and a mild climate, but the growers fertilize the fields with a local seaweed which is believed to enhance their rich flavour.

From appearance alone, you would not have guessed that Jersey Royal potatoes are often called 'the champagne of potatoes', in reference to the robust protections in place to ensure they achieve the highest standard and quality. They are relatively small in size and long or oval in shape, and have pale yellow to light brown skin. Beneath their delicate, flaky skin, however, is supremely delectable, firm, cream-coloured flesh that, once cooked, is tender, sweet, and earthy. We particularly noted their distinctly nutty undertones and wonderful freshness. They're only in season for a very short time, so make sure to buy them while you can!

Consumed in a similar way to other potato varieties, Jersey Royal potatoes are especially well suited to roasting, boiling, and baking. Why not follow local Jersey tradition and boil them in salt water before serving them with fresh mint and butter? They are also ideal for adding some subtle sweetness to salads, curries, and soups, and we'd recommend using them to make hearty shepherd pies and incorporating slices into gratins and casseroles.

Like other potatoes, Jersey Royal potatoes are an excellent source of fibre and potassium, and also provide good amounts of iron, folate, and vitamins C and B6.
