ABOUT CASSETTES: Tapes and  tape machines all operate differently. Weak motors, stretched belts and sticky transport rollers can fail at any moment particularly old ones especially when playing thinner tapes like double length cassettes. They may drag the pitch out of tune and/or eat the tape. For these reasons audio tapes cannot be guaranteed. At best cassettes have always be a "volatile" form for archiving audio. Due to the unknown condition of tape players we cannot guarantee vintage tapes.

OUR CASSETTE TESTING METHOD: 1.We fast forward and rewind them beginning to end to loosen the tape and check it's transport system. 2. We partially play the tapes on each side to check fidelity. 3. We inspect both the tape and its case for damage. If a case is cracked we replace it if we have a similar case. If the original is considered important we send you both cases.

Tape Tips 101:

  • The causes of "dragging" (slurred music) include old motor belts and/or motors, dirty tape transports, tapes that are "off center" on their spindle causing the tape to rub on one side of the casing or a tape that is too tight. This can be the result of use on a vertically oriented deck and then paying back on a horizontal deck or vice versa.
  • Players in good working condition easily overcome the last two compatibility issues. If your player drags try fast forwarding and rewinding the entire tape. This should loosen and center it on it's spindle for your player. If you still have issues service or replace your machine. In rare situations (such as being left in a hot car) the tape housing may be warped. In that case the tape must be removed and inserted into a new housing.
  • Never set any audio tape near a speaker, an amplifier or anything magnetic. The magnetism will erase frequencies and in extreme cases, everything.
  • Never trust any cassette player with an old or suspicious drive belt or one that doesn't receive regular head & transport mechanism cleaning. Bad things will happen to your tape.
