On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique map "Bowles's Reduced Map of Lancashire."  

DATE PRINTED: 1774 or shortly after, from a map first published in 1769.    

SIZE: The printed area of the view, including titles, is approximately 30 x 26 cm, 11.75 x 10.25" approx. (medium) plus margins and folds as issued.  

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Drawn by Thomas Bowen. Thomas Bowen (died 1790) was a Welsh engraver of charts. He was the son of Emanuel Bowen (1693/4–1767), map engraver to George II and Louis XV. He died in Clerkenwell workhouse early in 1790. 

PROVENANCE:  This series of maps first appeared in 'Kitchin's Pocket Atlas' in 1769.  Soon after they were published by Carington Bowles in 'Bowles's Pocket Atlas of the Counties of South Britain or England and Wales', c.1774 to c.1785.   Carrington Bowles (1724-93) printer and publisher St Pauls Churchyard London.  A very scarce publication with Chubb only recording a single example.

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on laid paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side which is blank.

CONDITION: Average; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian maps and prints are subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. I offer a no questions asked return policy.    Several repairs on the back to the fold edges. Traces of old glue at the plate edge where once mounted.  Overall a presentable but not perfect example, priced accordingly.
