1561 Crinitus of Florence Italy
Poetry Honesta Disciplina Plutarch Nostradamus
Pietro Crinito, more commonly called
Crinitus, was a 15th-century Florentine poet whose humanitarian
works were known to influence Nostradamus. His most important work was ‘On
Honest Discipline’, first published in 1504. The title itself is a bit
misleading, as the work is a collection of poems, translations, epigrams, and
direct quotes from other writers such as Tullius Laureas, Ausonius, Diogenes
Laertius, Plutarch, and others.
Crinitus is only known to have written two
other books in addition to ‘Honesty’, all of which are always printed
together. The other two lesser-known works were anthologies of Latin poems.
This 1561 Lyon edition of Crinitus includes
all three of his books and is highly
rare and very difficult to obtain! It was published by Gryphium with
the expected griffin printer’s device on the title page.
