Information about the musicians, the composer and the compositions
The Petersen Quartet, named after its founder Ulrike Petersen (*1961), was one of the leading string quartets. The quartet has not been active since autumn 2009.
Story
The ensemble was founded in Berlin in 1979 at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music and is based there. Mentors were the Amadeus Quartet, Sándor Végh and Thomas Brandis. In 1992 Ulrike Petersen left the quartet for family reasons. Since then, Conrad Muck has led the ensemble as principal. From 2008, alternating with Ulrike Petersen, who returned to the quartet.
Last line-up 2008/2009: Ulrike Petersen, violin, Conrad Muck, violin, Ula Ulijona, viola and Henry-David Varema, cello.
In addition to classical and romantic works, the repertoire included compositions from the 20th century to contemporary music. The ensemble was part of the great string quartet tradition that stretched from Ludwig van Beethoven to Béla Bartók and Arnold Schönberg. It was a regular guest in well-known concert halls.
The quartet has released numerous award-winning CD recordings by composers such as Franz Schubert, Aribert Reimann, Boris Blacher, Erwin Schulhoff and Ernst Krenek, who have been honored with the German Record Critics' Prize, the Echo Prize and the German Record Prize, among others.
The quartet has also made a name for itself with recordings of Beethoven's late works. For the interpretation of the string quartets op. 18.1 & op. 131 they received several international awards in 1995 with the Grand Prix Académie Chartes Cros, the Editor's Choice of the Gramophone and the Choc - Le Monde de la musique prize.
The quartet worked closely with artists such as Christine Schäfer, Juliane Banse, Christiane Oelze, Shlomo Mintz and Renaud Capuçon.

Franz Joseph Haydn (born March 31 or April 1, 1732 in Rohrau, Archduchy of Austria; died May 31, 1809 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer of the Viennese Classic period.
Joseph Haydn, brother of the composer Michael Haydn and the tenor Johann Evangelist Haydn, spent the greater part of his professional career as a court musician at the country estate of the wealthy Hungarian Esterházy family, whose orchestra and opera he conducted. Describing his isolation from other composers and musical currents, he said: "I was cut off from the world, no one around me could fool me and torment me about myself, so I had to become original."
Haydn's setting of the poem Gott erarme Franz, den Kaiser, Unsern gut Kaiser Franz!, premiered in 1797, became the Austrian imperial anthem and later became the German national anthem with a different text.
Quartet Op. 1 Hob: III・Joseph Haydn wrote a total of 68 quartets. Usually six quartets are combined into one opus number. Today, Haydn's string quartets are numbered according to Section III of the Hoboken Index. This census is based on the so-called "Haydn Index" from 1805, a list of works (with musical incipit) that Haydn had made by a copyist, but which inadvertently also included spurious works; also includes the arrangements of the Seven Last Words of our Savior on the Cross (hence the total 83).
String Quartet Op. 1 Nos. 1–6
Opus 1 (1762–64)
As with Opus 2, the compilation into a group of six does not come from Haydn, but from publishers. No. 5 is someone else's arrangement of a symphony by Haydn.
