Union Carbidefrom 1950This advertisement page is by the Union Carbide & Carbon Corporation, of New York, NY. Union Carbide ran a series of ads in the early 1950s, each a painting of different locations and items, each with a large hand or two doing something. This one is jet-piercing. The ad shows a hand ‘burning’ into the ground. Text starts “Fingers of flame that pierce solid rock” Paraphrasing Wikipedia: “Jet-piercing is the use of high-velocity jet flames to drill holes in hard rocks, as taconite, and to cut channels in granite quarries. It involves combustion of oxygen and a fuel oil fed under pressure through a nozzle to produce a jet flame generating a temperature above 2,600 degrees C. A stream of water joins the flame, and the combined effect is a thermodynamic spalling and disintegration of the rock into fragments that are blown from the hole or cut.” This ad is full page, approx. 7” x 10”, carefully removed from an actual 1950 magazine. my ad#50A7 Please see my other auctions for more goodies, books and magazines.
