Laser Cut and Etched Moon Phase Clock. Lunar Cycle Timepiece.
Laser etched and cut birch/poplar ply bonded with mdf backing for extra strength and rigidity.
The clock is 18cm in diameter (7.1") and the quartz battery movement has an integrated wall mount.
This is NOT a traditional clock - the hand takes 29 & 1/2 days to complete one clockwise revolution. This is the time taken by a cycle of the moon. The image pointed to on the clock face gives the appearance of the moon in the sky that night. If the hand is on the right hand side of the dial, then the moon is waxing and the lit portion of the moon's face is growing each day. When pointing straight down the moon is full and lit completely by the sun. If the hand is on the left hand side of the dial, then the moon is waning and becoming less lit each day until the hand reaches the straight up position and the new moon is lit only from behind.
This clock stands alone as a conversation piece but the phase of the moon can also be used as a rough guide to tidal range - new and full moons give rise to 'Spring Tides' which tend to be larger than normal whereas half moons tend to produce 'Neap Tides' of smaller range. The actual height of the tide is subject to weather, geographical and other variations but the link is a useful rule of thumb. Therefore, this clock works well in conjunction with the Tide Clock also for sale in our ebay store.
This clock will give a quick reckoning of the phase of the moon and be a talking point for anyone watching the skies, an interest in tides or simply wanting to know how dark it will be outside that night.
