Seventy-two square miles of every conceivable terrain: an island of flat coastal plains, tangled swamps, rocky coral ridges, steep cave covered mountains. For nearly a month in 1944, 70,000 United States marines and soldiers fought to take the island from its outnumbered but fanatical Japanese defenders. They succeeded, but at great cost. Two navies clashed at sea while the battle for the island raged. Its name was Saipan.
