Up for your consideration is the world known Chilton's 1940 Motor Age Flat Rate and Service Manual, 14th Edition (copyright 1940). This is the definitive manual for the auto collector and restorer. It covers all American made cars and trucks from 1933 to 1939, with tune up data for 1940 cars, and older 1925 to 1932 cars and trucks and is in Excellent condition, cover worn, pages NICE.

This bible of auto mechanics costs $6.00 in 1940, which was a lot of money in those days. You will see why...........

1939 Chiltons 2

Although originally for the professional car mechanic, where he/she could estimate the cost of a repair, this manual is actually more valuable now because of the fantastic references to part numbers and diagrams. As you see from the pictures, it details all the parts for the complete automobile. For instance, in the index section, the manual covers labor and parts for the:

Front End Systems, Steering, Independent Front Suspension, Brakes, Power and Vacuum Brakes, Cooling Systems, Manifold Gaskets, Fuel Systems, Muffler and Exhaust Systems, Engine and Engine Assembly inc. Inspection, Tuning and Cylinder work, lutch, Flywheel, and Transmissions, U-Joints, Axles, and Shocks, Ignition, Generator/Starters, and Switches, Fenders, Wheels/Hubs, and Body and Frame work! WOW!

1939 Chiltons 4

The book is divided into two sections, with the first 787 pages covering the flat rate. This is where you find those great part numbers! In the next section, which has 200 pages, it really gets into the meat and potatoes of repairing and restoring the classic automobile, even a Body and Frame chapter for the amateur body man (person). Every car and truck is detailed like this.

1939 Chiltons 6

And there is much more...........at the start of every section is the information on engine size, ID, serial numbers, body type, and specs for that particular auto. Great Info!!

1939 Chiltons 9

If that's not enough, exploded diagrams and illustrations fill this huge book, which is 987 pages long!

Again, the bulk of the book is the 1933 to 1939 Parts Numbers/Tune Up Data/Flat Rate for American cars. There is also the Tune Up data for the 1940 cars and trucks......AND..... the Tune Up data for older cars and trucks......1925 to 1932.

This book covers: Auburn, Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, Chrysler, Cord, Crosley, DeSoto, Dodge, Ford, Graham, Hudson, Hudson-Terraplane, Hupmobile, Lafayette, LaSalle, Lincoln, Lincoln-Zephyr, Mercury 8, Nash (inc Lafayette), Olds, Overland, Packard, Plymouth, Pontiac, Studebaker, Terraplane, Willys, and Willys-Knight.
